Hatsuhinode or 初日の出, is the Japanese way of naming the first sunrise of the year, as it holds a special significance. ![]() Come January 1, it’s a time to celebrate all things hatsu’ or “first.” Hence the customs of hatsuyume (first dream), hatsuwarai (first laugh) and hatsuhinode. But in Japan, Christmas is saved for partying and New Year is a time to spend with family, eating New Year osechi and making plans or wishes for the coming year.
